Overview

Visual Arts (MA) - formally the MA in Art History and Curatorial Studies - is offered by the Department of Visual Arts in Western University's Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The one-year program requires full-time study across three terms (fall, winter, summer) and offers three streams: course-based, thesis-based, and project-based (curatorial). All MA and MFA students begin with a shared core course in art theory and research methods before moving into small seminar courses; depending on stream, students also complete an internship opportunity and a major research paper or thesis. The program trains students in the histories and theories of art and visual culture and prepares graduates for further study in the field as well as careers in museums, galleries, and other areas of the arts. Students may apply for funding such as the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Master's and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship.
