The Communication & Culture PhD examines the social, political, and economic dimensions of communication and cultural production, covering topics such as globalization, deregulation, privacy and security, the convergence of communication industries, cross-cultural communication, and new media. The program is offered jointly by York and Ryerson, drawing on shared facilities and faculty from both universities across communications, the social sciences, humanities, media, and fine arts. Research strengths include communication and cultural theory, cultural policy and law, cultural and media history, telecommunications policy and strategy, the political economy of media, critical analysis of technology, and globalization. Students complete qualifying examinations and a dissertation over a nominal 18-term program, offered on both a full-time and part-time basis with the same program length for each. Graduates finish with a solid grounding in the practices, processes, and technologies of contemporary communication and cultural production.
