York University's Graduate Program in Philosophy offers a Master of Arts (MA) that prepares students for doctoral study through training in philosophical argument and method. Students specialize in one of four areas: ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of law; philosophy of cognitive science, mind, and language; the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century philosophy; or philosophy of science and epistemology. Teaching draws on both traditional and interdisciplinary methods, including empirical, conceptual, and applied approaches, and students may pursue a supplementary diploma in Value Theory and Applied Ethics or in Neuroscience alongside the MA. The program runs three terms of full-time study, with Fall entry and an application deadline of January 15. Admission requires a minimum B+ average, three letters of recommendation, a current resume or CV, a statement of interest, and either a 5,000-word paper or two shorter writing samples. Applicants whose first language is not English must also meet York's minimum TOEFL or IELTS score.
