Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Justice System Administration is a concurrent diploma awarded alongside an eligible graduate degree at York University, including the Master's in Public Policy, Administration and Law. Students examine the literature on judicial administration in Canada and compare it with other jurisdictions, alongside related literature on law and public administration. Each student focuses their major research paper or topics paper on a subject related to justice system administration, approved by the Diploma Coordinator, involving both primary and secondary research to evaluate and critically comment on justice-system programs in a broader societal setting. Students also complete a work placement in an organization within the justice system, or one where relevant management skills can be developed; students without substantial managerial experience in the justice system complete a 12-week placement, which the Coordinator may waive for those already working in a relevant role. Students locate their own placement site.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This is a concurrent diploma: it is only available to students who have already been admitted to an eligible graduate program at York University, such as the Master's in Public Policy, Administration and Law (MPPAL). There is no separate application; enrolled students arrange with the Diploma Coordinator to focus their major research or topics paper on justice system administration and complete a required work placement, which may be waived for students already working in a justice-system-related role.
