Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Foundations of Canadian Law is described by York University as the only program of its kind in Canada. It gives internationally trained law graduates a grounding in Canadian law across key areas of public and private law, covering Canada's legal history and structure, skills-focused topics such as legal research and writing, and more specialized elective topics. The diploma is aimed primarily at graduates of law degree programs from civil law jurisdictions outside Canada who need a foundation in common law before pursuing accreditation to practise in Canada, as well as internationally trained law graduates seeking academic and career training and support. It functions as a standalone, non-degree credential rather than a step toward a Canadian law degree.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Intended for graduates of law degree programs from civil law jurisdictions outside Canada who need a foundation in common law before pursuing accreditation to practise in Canada, and for internationally trained law graduates seeking academic and career training and support.
