Program details

Overview

This program leads to a Research LLM (Master of Laws) at Osgoode Hall Law School, a full-time, research-intensive degree completed through either a thesis or a major research paper under the supervision of a faculty member pursuing original research. Students work closely with their supervisor to develop and complete an independent research project in their chosen area of law. A parallel PhD track is available at Osgoode for students pursuing an academic research career, involving extensive research-intensive study beyond the LLM level. The program accepts a limited number of international applicants each cycle. The Research LLM suits law graduates who want to deepen expertise in a specific area of law through independent, supervised research, whether as a stepping stone to doctoral study or as an advanced credential in itself.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants require a minimum B average, a resume or CV, one writing sample, two references, a statement of interest (research proposal), transcripts, and a supplementary information form for the research stream. Unless exempt, applicants must meet York's graduate English proficiency minimums: IELTS Academic (Academic Module) 7.5, TOEFL iBT 5 (MyBest scale, for tests taken January 2026 or later), Duolingo English Test 140, PTE Academic 76, or CAEL overall 70 with no component below 60.
