The Graduate Diploma in Value Theory and Applied Ethics is a Type 2 diploma offered by York University's Graduate Program in Philosophy, awarded only in conjunction with an MA or PhD in Philosophy rather than as a stand-alone credential. Students who qualify for the MA or PhD in Philosophy may be granted the diploma by completing two additional 3-credit courses in value theory or applied ethics beyond their degree's normal requirements, with two of the MA's four required electives, or two of the PhD's six required electives, drawn from this area. Candidates also complete a Major Research Paper of 8,000 to 10,000 words on an approved value-theory or applied-ethics topic. An approved practicum at an outside institution, or one additional 3-credit course in a related area of applied ethics, may substitute for one of the extra coursework requirements. The diploma deepens a student's knowledge of value theory and its application to real ethical problems.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Candidates must first be admitted to the MA or PhD program in Philosophy at York University; this is a Type 2 diploma awarded only in conjunction with that graduate degree, with no separate admission process. Diploma requirements are two 3-credit courses in value theory or applied ethics beyond the degree's normal course load, drawn from the MA's four or the PhD's six required electives, plus a Major Research Paper of 8,000 to 10,000 words on an approved topic in the field; an approved practicum or one related 3-credit applied-ethics course may substitute for one of the additional courses.
