Yukon University's Heavy Equipment Technician Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate is an 18-week, on-campus program combining classroom instruction with shop-based training. In its first block, running from the start of the fall semester to the middle of the winter semester, students build theoretical trade knowledge alongside hands-on shop experience with heavy equipment and power tools. The program covers job safety skills and workplace hazard awareness, along with the mathematical concepts used in the trade, and completes the theoretical requirements for Level I apprenticeship, giving graduates the opportunity to challenge Level I apprenticeship exams. Graduates are prepared to pursue employment and further apprenticeship training in the heavy equipment field. Students must maintain an overall grade of 70% (a C average) across all courses to graduate.
