Culinary Arts Certificate

Yukon University's Culinary Arts Certificate is a one-year, two-semester program that trains students as professional cooks for the hospitality industry. Delivered on campus in Whitehorse, the program uses a commercial teaching kitchen where students rotate through stations covering the full range of kitchen operations, from food preparation and baking to sanitation and kitchen management. Students gain hands-on experience through catering, banquets, and community events alongside classroom instruction in food theory and safety. Training follows industry practice in professional kitchens, building the technical and organizational skills expected of entry-level cooks. The program begins each September and leads to a Culinary Arts certificate on completion. Students are expected to supply their own knives, uniforms, and textbooks, at an estimated annual cost of about $1,750, and must complete a satisfactory tuberculosis test before starting practical kitchen work, along with appropriate footwear before meal preparation begins.
