This teaching degree explores the tongue, writing and civilisation of countries where English is spoken. Students survey both older and recent writing and cultural life, and look at topical issues in structural and applied linguistics.
Geographically the focus falls on Britain, North America and postcolonial regions. Because the approach is interdisciplinary, detailed work on language, literature and culture continually touches on the humanities and social fields of history, philosophy and politics, as well as media research. Practice modules sharpen grammar, word knowledge and writing style. In the second year, learners pick electives and a profile in one of three directions: English linguistics with communication, American studies of the North, or literature and culture of Britain and former colonies.
For training at Gymnasien and Gesamtschulen, a second subject and educational science are included. Public school teaching afterwards requires a Master of Education. Other careers include running cultural venues, media work, publishing, tourism and scholarship. English is the language of instruction.
