This Master of Education covers German studies broadly, mixing theory and method with language science, literature, cultural studies and the history of media. Students go further into central areas of linguistics and look closely at present-day research questions and ways of analysing language. They also work with literary and media theory and with questions about how literature developed over time.
Compared with the bachelor stage, the weight shifts away from pure research and toward teaching practice. Didactics modules treat German as something to be taught and develop both the theory and the methods of teaching it.
The track is meant for future teachers at Gymnasien and comprehensive schools, where candidates take German alongside a second subject and educational science. A placement semester is central. The degree lasts four semesters, can begin in winter or summer, is taught in German and has no admission restriction. Teaching is the main career; the German Language and Literature master's page lists other options.
