The Department of Visual Communication at the Art Academy of Latvia explores new forms of creative expression by combining digital media and interactive technology with analogue and traditional materials, in both real and virtual settings. The master's route lasts two years full-time and awards a humanities master's degree in audiovisual and media arts; a four-year bachelor's route is taught in the same department.
Students gain theory and hands-on skills in digital photography, video editing, printing, three-dimensional modelling, media composition and technologies for building virtual environments, together with some traditional printmaking methods such as screen printing, monotype and intaglio. They form their own contemporary outlook and critical thinking and become professional audiovisual media artists.
Current and former students take part in the local and international contemporary art scene, and former students have shown Latvian work at the Venice Biennale, at Manifesta, and at the biennales in Sao Paulo and Sydney.
