Overview
This master's programme prepares medical geneticists to work independently in the laboratories of health care institutions, structured so that the first year builds foundational biomedical science knowledge and begins research work, while the second year develops an integrated approach to laboratory medical genetics alongside manual laboratory skills and a master's thesis. Core subjects include cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, general laboratory diagnostics, statistics in genetics, molecular genetics, genomics and epigenomics, and bioinformatic analysis methods.
The programme also covers genetic counselling and bioethics, joining cytogenetic, oncogenetic, molecular, and metabolic or biochemical genetics into a single laboratory specialty that supports clinical and medical genetic specialists across fields including paediatrics, obstetrics, and oncology. Graduates gain deep knowledge of laboratory services and the interpretation of results for both inherited and sporadic genetic disorders, and can work in public institutions, hospitals, and clinics in Lithuania and abroad, or continue into doctoral study.
