The Bachelor's programme in Eastern European Studies is run jointly by the universities of Bern and Fribourg, which together hold one of the largest concentrations of Eastern European expertise in Switzerland. Students study the political and social problems of Eastern European transformation societies, including minority questions, managing ethnic diversity, political and social transformation, democratisation and institutional change.
The six-semester bachelor starts with a propaedeutic phase in semesters one and two, comprising a lecture series, a skills exercise on information gathering and introductory seminars on research methods. The main study phase in semesters three to six combines historical, cultural and contemporary topics in subject modules. Teaching is in German and French, and the study plan was revised for autumn semester 2022.
