Looking at environmental politics from the standpoints of fairness and radical campaigning, this research master's introduces you to the issues defining the field. Staff are studying the climate emergency and how societies respond to it, environmental risk, water management, biodiversity and rewilding, conflicts between nature and people, extractive industries and energy supply.
You consider how measures and rules are drawn up, bargained over, disputed and carried out by public bodies, companies and community groups. Much of your time goes on an independent research project, overseen by an academic expert in your chosen subject, and you can use the university's specialist facilities.
You also join a research centre focused on environment and society. The setting is helpful: a city known for protest, diversity and political engagement, beside a national park. You can enrol on a full or part-time basis.
