Overview

Preparing trainees to teach English in secondary schools, this year-long course explores literature, language and the skills of communication. Trainees learn ways to help young people put their ideas across clearly and to value other viewpoints, through reading and writing alike, encouraging pupils to find a voice of their own. Subject study is combined with teaching practice from early in the year. Sessions are held in specialist facilities that reproduce school surroundings and are taught by an expert team. Throughout the year trainees gain varied experience from placements in schools. Completion brings Qualified Teacher Status, the recognised qualification for teaching, and equips trainees to encourage a lasting enthusiasm for reading among their future pupils. Study is full-time and takes place at Falmer.
