BA/BS in Communication and Media Studies

Students in this communications major learn by doing, with a curriculum that supports personal creative growth. Equipment and topics include drones, podcasting and other new media, and learners can assist on faculty film productions or lead projects of their own. The program was recently reclassified as STEM, which employers tend to value. Instructors keep classes small and offer attention to each student. Several concentrations are available, and the department also provides minors in cinema studies and video game design. Anyone in another major can add a communications minor with a flexible plan built around journalism, media studies or production. After graduation, people take positions in television and media companies, public relations, journalism, content creation and social media, or make independent films. Others apply to graduate programs in law, business or teaching. Student work has included reporting and scholarships funded by alumni in the film industry.
