The MS in Literacy Education develops teachers who also act as scholars of reading and writing. Students learn to support learners from many cultures, backgrounds and ability levels and to study trends in literacy instruction in search of fresh approaches to reading growth.
Practicum placements at the Literacy Center give students direct work with children. Professors bring deep experience to the subject, and small classes encourage close relationships. The degree is taught on the Garden City campus, and an advanced certificate in literacy for all grades is offered for candidates who already hold a master's.
Applicants must have New York State teacher certification and a minimum 3.0 GPA. The file includes a graduate application with a $60 fee, a personal essay, two online recommender surveys and official transcripts, plus a course evaluation for any study completed outside the United States.
