Overview

Applied Biotechnology is a bachelor's major in Auburn's College of Agriculture, awarding the BS. It joins laboratory technique, applied classes and an internship in the biotechnology field. Students work through biology and chemistry foundations, then specialized material: bioinformatics, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics and genomics, cell biology, pesticide toxicology, and the study of plant diseases and insects. Junior year includes a choice among plant pathology, entomology and weed science, plus a methods course in synthetic biology. The full program adds up to 120 semester hours, of which 41 come from the university core curriculum. Out of the hours in the discipline, at least 16 must sit at the 3000 level or above. For the summer, students pick either an internship or undergraduate research, giving the degree a practical, hands-on character.
