Through the languages of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East, students investigate the history, customs, myths and notable events of those societies. Reading assignments come from Greek, Roman and wider Near Eastern authors.
Each major finishes a three-semester language sequence, choosing Arabic, Greek, Hebrew or Latin, or demonstrates comparable ability. The training sharpens critical and creative thinking, which is useful in a wide range of careers and in competitive graduate programs.
The major requires 30 credits beyond the university core. Students may also add a minor in ancient history, which surveys the Near Eastern, Greek and Roman past, or a minor in classical and Near Eastern civilizations.
