Cert in American Sign Language

This certificate serves Cuyamaca College students who want stronger signing and comprehension abilities along with insight into Deaf culture and the Deaf community. The focus is on paraprofessional work and on preparing for further study. Students take four levels of American Sign Language plus electives, including signing with infants and toddlers or with school-age children. After finishing, students may move on to interpreter training, more ASL or Deaf Studies coursework, or a university. The catalog recommends that interested students contact department faculty first. Students should meet with a counselor to confirm prerequisites, decide the order of classes and see how the units count toward other certificates or degrees at the college. Careful sequencing helps people finish in a reasonable time while balancing work and other commitments.
