Cert in Special Education and Teaching

Students in this certificate train to assist teachers as classroom aides serving special education students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Finishing it meets the federal standard that school districts apply when hiring, and it lays the groundwork for the transfer associate degree in elementary teacher education. Learners acquire introductory subject knowledge, explore social, cultural, environmental, and artistic viewpoints, and discuss how history has shaped education. The published program map lays out one possible route through the required courses and is offered for reference only. Students are asked to meet with a counselor to build a personal education plan. Each course entry in the catalog lists its description, any prerequisites or advisories, and the general education or transfer areas it satisfies. Transfer plans deserve a counselor conversation too, because every university sets its own course requirements.
