Overview
Golden West's interpreting program in American Sign Language prepares students for general entry-level employment as interpreters. The work means taking in a message in one language, understanding what it means and intends, then conveying it in another, which demands linguistic, cognitive and technical skill.
Interpreters work in settings that range from public events to personal medical and counseling situations. Instruction centers on American Sign Language, though other forms of signed English also appear in the coursework.
Students also receive basic information about deafness and related areas of knowledge that interpreters need. The program sits in the Arts and Letters division, which can be reached through the contact details on its page.
Prospective students can consult the college catalog, the class schedule and the academic calendar, all linked from the department page. They are also encouraged to contact the division office listed there for guidance on course planning, degree requirements and the steps involved in getting started at Golden West College.
