AA/AS in Anthropology

Anthropology looks at people as a whole: how societies are organized, how cultures develop and differ, and how the human species came to be. Students in this program study these questions with attention to both past and present, and they come away better able to understand viewpoints different from their own. Learning is not limited to lectures. Some courses include fieldwork and research projects, which give students practice in observing carefully, collecting information, analyzing it, and explaining their conclusions in writing and conversation. Courses are designed to count toward University of California and California State University transfer requirements, offering a route into a bachelor's degree. The skills involved apply to teaching, research, social work, and museums or similar cultural organizations, as well as to any workplace that values global awareness.
