Cert in Marine Sciences

This Five College certificate offers hands-on, interdisciplinary training in marine science and policy for students drawn to the ocean. It draws on natural sciences such as ecology and geology, and social sciences such as public policy and economics. Students learn to integrate evidence across disciplines. Students complete six courses, roughly 80 hours in the field, and an independent research project with a faculty advisor. The capstone allows in-depth investigation of a chosen area and prepares students for graduate school or marine careers. Advising helps students plan the sequence of coursework. Students engage with coastal policy and marine science concepts, and graduates often pursue fieldwork, research, or policy careers connected to the ocean. Advisers help students select courses that fit their interests, whether in conservation, fisheries, environmental law, or ocean education.
