The sociology major at Utah State examines everyday social life, how societies shift, and what drives and follows from human behavior. It sits in the College of Arts and Sciences and can be studied on the Logan campus, at statewide campuses and through USU Online.
Topics include crime and juvenile delinquency, gender roles, economic and educational systems, social inequality, environmental influences on behavior, and population growth and settlement. Students learn the research methods sociologists use, among them interviews, ethnography, conversation analysis, surveys and statistical analysis.
Graduates build skills in research, communication and working with others, which open many career paths. A BS follows from finishing the required major courses, and a BA additionally calls for proficiency in a foreign language. A teaching emphasis lets students prepare for a secondary teaching license through a separate education program run by the teacher education school.
