Overview

The associate degree in dental hygiene prepares students to examine patients, identify signs of oral disease, and provide preventive care. Clinical training takes place alongside classroom instruction, so learners build practical skills under supervision. Private dental offices remain the most common workplace, though other career paths are open to graduates. Applicants must complete prerequisite courses in English, chemistry, biology, and human anatomy and physiology with a grade of C or higher. Additional steps include taking a health science reasoning test, logging clinical observation hours, submitting references and an essay, and paying an application fee. Selected candidates go through an interview before acceptance into the program, and the coursework that follows moves from theory into supervised clinic work. Graduates may consider further study or specialized clinical roles after completing the associate degree.
