The University of Salford grew out of two 19th-century institutions, the Pendleton Mechanics Institute (1850) and the Salford Working Men's College (1858), which combined to create the Royal Technical Institute, Salford, opened in 1896.

That institution later became the Royal College of Advanced Technology, and on 10 February 1967 Queen Elizabeth II granted it a Royal Charter as the University of Salford. Today the university operates across three campuses, Peel Park, Frederick Road and MediaCity, and is organised into four schools: Salford Business School, the School of Health and Society, the School of Science, Engineering and Environment, and the Salford School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology.

Its community numbers more than 23,000 students, around 2,500 staff and some 170,000 alumni. Teaching and research remain industry-focused, with a current emphasis on robotics, digital technology and smart living that continues the institution's roots as a technical college.
