Overview

This Master of Social Work at Algoma University is based at the Sault Ste. Marie campus and can be completed full-time or part-time over a minimum of three semesters. The curriculum is grounded in equity, diversity, and inclusion and in anti-oppressive, anti-racist social work education, examining topics including anti-Black racism, anti-Indigenous racism, and decolonizing methodologies alongside required courses in advanced research methods, community practice ethics, anti-oppressive clinical practice, and critical theory. Electives cover areas such as Indigenous perspectives, gender, climate change, food sovereignty, and services for older adults. Students choose between a thesis stream and a field-practicum stream, the latter requiring 450 hours of practicum placement. The program is intended for graduates of a Bachelor of Social Work degree and suits those preparing for generalist practice with marginalized groups, including people in rural and remote areas. Graduates work across settings such as public agencies, hospitals, schools, and correctional and community services.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 75.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission requires completion of a Bachelor of Social Work degree accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE), with a minimum GPA of 75% (B average) across the last two years of study. The program's own page does not list a standardized English-language test score for this degree; applicants should meet Algoma University's general English Language Requirements, which set IELTS Academic 6.0 overall (no band below 6.0), TOEFL 4, Duolingo 110, PTE 60, CAEL 60, or Cambridge English 176 as the baseline for direct entry. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission: places are limited, and the School of Social Work also assesses each applicant's aptitude for graduate study. Admitted students choose between two full-time streams of at least three semesters each: a Thesis stream, or a Field Practicum stream requiring 450 hours of supervised field practicum, delivered in person at the Sault Ste. Marie campus.
