Overview

The Bachelor of Music is a four-year, 120-credit degree at Ambrose University in Calgary requiring a full course load of 15 credits per semester, with most courses worth three credits. Students receive specialized instruction on their chosen instrument alongside broader training in music theory, music history, music technology, conducting, and composition. Two streams are available, Classical and Jazz, each with instrument-specific audition requirements. The program includes substantial performance and work-integrated learning opportunities, including choral programs, concerto solo auditions with the Chamber Orchestra, jazz combos, and chamber music mentorship; students also regularly present their work at Ambrose's annual Research Conference. The degree suits students aiming for careers such as performance musician, conductor, music therapist, musicologist, or sound engineer. Admission requires a minimum grade of 70% in Advanced Rudiments (Royal Conservatory of Music) and passing an entrance audition, with instrument-specific proficiency expectations ranging up to Grade 8-9 Royal Conservatory level depending on the instrument.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 60.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission follows Ambrose University's general undergraduate requirements: five Grade 12 (or equivalent) courses, including English 30-1, with a minimum 60% average, plus the Bachelor of Music's own prerequisites. Applicants need Advanced Rudiments (Royal Conservatory of Music) with a minimum grade of 70%, and must satisfy a Level 8 RCM theory requirement either by RCM Theory Exam, by passing Ambrose's own placement exam (minimum 70%), or by completing the non-credit preparatory course MU 016 or MU 036. A mandatory entrance audition is required; applicants within reasonable driving distance are expected to audition in person, with recorded auditions considered only with Music Department approval. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet Ambrose's language-proficiency standard: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 83 (560 paper-based), MELAB 85, CAEL 70, PTE Academic 58, or Alberta English 30-1 at 50%, with scores less than two years old.
