Overview

Music Technology & Digital Media (Jazz) is a four-year, 20-credit Bachelor of Music program offered by the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto's St. George campus, combining jazz study with music technology. Students develop proficiency with professional audio systems, industry-standard software, and multimedia production workflows through small seminars and project-based courses, alongside a core curriculum covering jazz history, melody and harmony, and jazz theory and ear training. A four-year technology sequence includes Introduction to Computer Programming in Year 1, Musical Acoustics, Psychoacoustics, and Technical Ear Training in Year 2, and participation in the Electronic Music Ensemble in Years 2 and 3. Admission requires a portfolio of music-and-technology creative work, a live or recorded audition, a pre-screening recording, the Jazz Entrance Theory Exam, and a faculty interview with program staff, in addition to standard academic admission requirements. Music and breadth electives allow students to shape their studies toward composition, performance, computer science, or music for media.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Grade 12 U/M courses including ENG4U/EAE4U (the co-op component of Grade 12 courses is not used for admission purposes). Music admission requirements include a pre-screening recording, live/recorded audition, and a portfolio showing experience with music and technology creative work, plus an interview with program faculty. Applicants must meet both academic admission requirements and music admission requirements: an audition on the applicant's major instrument, at least one faculty interview, and a minimum score of 60% on the University of Toronto Jazz Entrance Theory Examination.
