Music Technology & Digital Media (Classical) is a four-year, 20-credit Bachelor of Music program offered by the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto's St. George campus, combining classical music study with music technology. Students develop proficiency with professional audio systems, industry-standard software, and multimedia production workflows alongside a core curriculum of music history and culture, music theory, musical skills, and keyboard harmony. A four-year technology sequence includes Introduction to Computer Programming in Year 1, Musical Acoustics and Psychoacoustics and Technical Ear Training in Year 2, and participation in the Electronic Music Ensemble in Years 2 and 3. Admission requires a portfolio demonstrating experience with music and technology creative work, such as original compositions, media scoring, recordings, or music software; a live or recorded audition, which may be on any instrument or genre for applicants applying only to this program; the University of Toronto Entrance Theory Exam; and a faculty interview, in addition to standard academic admission requirements. Graduates pursue careers spanning composition, performance, audio production, and music technology development.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Grade 12 U/M courses including ENG4U/EAE4U (the co-op component of Grade 12 courses is not used for admission purposes). Successful candidates must demonstrate experience with music and technology creative work through a portfolio (original compositions or arrangements, media scoring, performances, engineered/produced recordings, or developed music-related software/apps); applicants applying only to this program may audition in any genre and on any instrument, including technology-as-instrument setups. Applicants must meet both academic admission requirements and music admission requirements: an audition on the applicant's major instrument, at least one faculty interview, and a minimum score of 60% on the University of Toronto Entrance Theory Examination.
