BA/BS in Music Education (Jazz)

Music Education (Jazz) is a four-year, 20-credit Bachelor of Music program in the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto's St. George campus, preparing music educators who approach teaching and learning from a jazz perspective. The curriculum combines music history and culture, music theory, musical skills, and keyboard harmony with individual instruction on a primary performance instrument and participation in jazz ensembles, alongside study of jazz history and the characteristics of the art form. Students begin with Introduction to Music Education in Year 1 and continue through coursework in instrumental techniques, rehearsal methods, pedagogy, and conducting. Admission requires meeting both the Faculty's academic admission requirements and its music admission requirements, including an audition on the applicant's major instrument, an interview, and the University of Toronto Jazz Entrance Theory Exam. Graduates pursue roles as music teachers in schools, community music educators, and artist-teachers in community organizations and arts institutions.
