Music Performance (Jazz) is a four-year, 20-credit Bachelor of Music in Performance offered by the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto's St. George campus. The program provides instruction in aural skills, harmony, jazz history, improvisation, and rhythm across jazz, commercial, and global styles, combining private applied lessons on the student's major instrument with participation in large and small jazz ensembles and masterclasses. Students study improvisation for a minimum of two years and may pursue further electives in areas such as music technology, music entrepreneurship, or ethnomusicology. The program is delivered in small class sizes with close faculty contact across all four years. Admission requires an audition on the applicant's major instrument, an interview, and a passing score on the University of Toronto Jazz Entrance Theory Exam, in addition to standard academic admission requirements. The degree prepares graduates for careers as performing jazz musicians, studio and ensemble musicians, and further study at the graduate level.
