Overview
This eight-month Public Safety advanced diploma, offered in partnership with the Brandon Police Service, builds on students' previous post-secondary education to prepare graduates as competitive candidates in policing and other public safety recruiting processes, and is recognized as basic police recruit training for Manitoba police agencies. Coursework covers working within established legal standards in the protection, security and investigation fields, making timely and legally defensible safety decisions, conducting and contributing to investigations by collecting and presenting admissible evidence, resolving crisis and conflict situations, and observing, evaluating and documenting behaviours and events, alongside personal and professional development strategies. Admission requires a two-year diploma or university degree, current first aid and CPR certification, and criminal record and abuse registry checks, with a competitive-entry process that includes a pre-entry interview. The program prepares graduates for roles in municipal and First Nation policing, other Canadian police services, and public safety positions with agencies such as the Canada Border Services Agency, Sheriff's Department or corrections.
