Overview
This two-year Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology diploma program prepares multi-skilled health professionals to perform core laboratory tests, general diagnostic radiography and electrocardiograms in support of diagnosis and patient care, particularly in community hospitals and health centres in rural and remote parts of Manitoba. The curriculum blends classroom theory with hands-on training in campus labs and clinical education, covering specimen collection and handling, hematology, blood bank work, clinical chemistry and urinalysis, ECG acquisition and interpretation, and radiographic patient care, positioning, image acquisition and safe equipment operation, with attention to quality, safety and culturally responsive, patient-centred practice. The program includes 29 weeks of supervised clinical placement in healthcare facilities. A valid driver's licence and vehicle access are recommended given possible travel for clinical placements in rural and remote locations. Because it alternates intakes with the related Medical Laboratory Technology program, it is offered every second year. Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires a completed Manitoba Grade 12 credential or equivalent, with English 40G/40S (or equivalent) at a minimum of 70%, Pre-Calculus, Applied, or Essential Mathematics 40S (or equivalent) at a minimum of 70%, Biology 30S and 40S (or equivalent) at a minimum of 70%, and Chemistry 40S (or equivalent) at a minimum of 70%; post-secondary courses may satisfy these prerequisites. English is the language of instruction at Assiniboine; applicants educated outside Canada or from a non-exempt country must meet the college's institution-wide English language proficiency policy (an approved test, or a waiver such as three years of English-medium Canadian high school including Grade 12 English), as this programme's page states no score of its own. This is a competitive-entry programme: applicants must complete the CASPer®2 situational-judgment test and submit a letter of intent. Accepted applicants must also provide current Basic Life Support/CPR-HCP certification, a criminal record vulnerable sector check, child and adult abuse registry checks, and proof of required immunisations before practicum.
