Program details

Overview

Modern Languages at Bishop's University is a Certificate offered by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the Faculty of Humanities. The certificate is designed for part-time students and provides a working knowledge of at least two of the modern languages taught at Bishop's: French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. Students who are accepted into an international exchange program may also be eligible for travel scholarships offered by the Quebec Ministry of Education. The program admits students each Fall and Winter term and is open to applicants from high school, CEGEP, another university, or outside Canada. Graduates are prepared for careers such as translator, interpreter, language teacher, diplomatic agent, journalist, and international student advisor, among other roles drawing on multilingual and cross-cultural competency.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission is assessed by applicant category. CEGEP students who have completed or are completing a DEC may apply regardless of the DEC's field of study, with no specific prerequisite courses required; the estimated minimum admission average is a 24 global R-Score (25 R-Score for School of Education programs). Canadian high school applicants from outside Quebec must complete five Grade 12 level university-preparatory courses, including Grade 12 level English, three Approved courses, and one further Approved or Option course; required and approved courses vary by province. International, IB, transfer, mature-student, and other applicant categories have their own published requirements. All applicants must submit a recent transcript, and CEGEP applicants must also provide their Quebec permanent code. Meeting the posted minimum does not guarantee admission, as applications are evaluated competitively when demand exceeds available spaces.
