Program details
Overview
The Physics and Astronomy program at Brandon University covers the fundamental laws governing matter and energy, from subatomic particles to stars, galaxies, and the universe, and develops problem-solving skills applicable to both pure and applied physics. Based at the John R. Brodie Science Centre in Brandon, Manitoba, the department gives students access to a research-grade astronomical telescope, a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance laboratory, a 54-processor computing cluster, and an open-source student computer lab. A co-op option, offered through the university's Co-op Program, lets students combine work experience with degree study. Sample coursework includes Foundations of Physics, Solar System Astronomy, The Galaxy and the Universe, Stellar and Galactic Astrophysics, Modern Physics, and Electricity and Magnetism. The program suits students drawn to the physical sciences and mathematics, and prepares graduates for careers such as astronomer, medical physicist, engineer, researcher, science writer, teacher, and meteorologist.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Physics and Astronomy admission follows Brandon University's general requirements: Manitoba high school graduates without an M, I or E designation on their transcript receive a conditional offer once they submit the application, fee and interim transcript, while out-of-province Canadian applicants need a minimum 60% average on their province's university-preparatory courses, including English. The Department of Physics & Astronomy's own page adds a specific subject prerequisite for this program: PHYS 40S and MATH 40S (Pre-Calculus). Applicants whose first language is not English, or who lack at least three years of English-medium secondary or post-secondary study, must meet Brandon's English Language Proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (min. 6.0 per band), TOEFL iBT 86 overall (min. 20 per section; an alternative 4.5/4.0 scale applies from January 21, 2026), Duolingo English Test 120 overall (min. 105 per component), PTE Academic 58, CAEL 60, or Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 overall (min. 170 per component); a Manitoba Grade 12 English 40S at 70%+, IB Higher Level English 4+, AP English 4+ or Brandon's own EAP Tier 4 program is exempt. International applicants apply through the same portal for a CAD $140 fee, with transcripts assessed against Manitoba equivalencies.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to Brandon University: for Fall (September) 2027 entry the deadline is August 15, 2027, and for Winter (January) 2027 entry it is December 1, 2026. International applicants must apply earlier: April 1, 2027 for Fall 2027 entry, and August 1, 2027 for the next open Winter window (Winter 2028 entry), since the Winter 2027 international deadline of August 1, 2026 has already passed. Applications for the new academic year open October 1 each year. A late application for one term is automatically carried to the following term rather than rejected, but Brandon does not otherwise describe admission as rolling. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
