Program details

Overview

The certificate is designed for certified respiratory therapists, critical care nurses, cardiac professionals, or graduates of related degrees who want to build further expertise. It develops a strong grounding in cardiothoracic anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology, with particular attention to pathophysiology and surgical technique ahead of clinical rotations. Training takes place alongside qualified clinical perfusionists in a hospital setting, covering the theory and practice of safe cardiopulmonary bypass through lectures, wet-lab work, class days, and student presentations. Some graduates go on to work at their sponsoring hospital.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: A bachelor's degree plus CARD 1187 (Introductory Statistics for Health) or equivalent is required. Applicants then qualify through one of two routes: a minimum two years' current experience as a Certified Respiratory Therapist or Critical Care RN, evidenced by an employer letter; or completion of 6.0 credits of 100-level chemistry, 6.0 credits of 100-level physics, BHSC 1200 (Human Anatomy and Physiology), CARD 1103 (Medical Terminology) and, for applicants lacking patient-care experience, CARD 1186. English language proficiency follows BCIT's Category 1 standard, English Studies 12 at 73% or equivalent. Applicants also complete the Casper online situational-judgment test, and shortlisted candidates sit an in-person visual-spatial and fluid-reasoning test, a criminal record check, current CPR-C/AED certification, an immunization review and a respirator fit test.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
