Overview
The program provides a combination of lab and lecture instruction at BCIT and clinical experience in the diagnostic neurophysiology departments of major hospitals. Note: Half of all clinical practicums will occur outside of the Lower Mainland.
The program draws from a variety of subject areas:
- Basic physics principles and their application to Electroneurophysiology Technology are explained.
- Engineering provides the context for discussing electronics, electrical signals, and electrical safety.
- Basic health sciences inform about human physiology and the biological signals to be measured.
- Social sciences prepare you for interpersonal relationships within the clinical environment.
- Extensive clinical experience helps you develop necessary practical skills in the work environment.
In both spring and fall terms, special courses in electroneurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and neuropathology train students in the basics of biological signal measurement and clinical apparatus. The program covers different areas of clinical experience: electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), evoked potentials, and polysomnography.
Upon completion of the two-year program, graduates receive a Diploma in Electroneurophysiology. After a period of work experience in a clinical situation, graduates are eligible to write the Technologist Registration examinations of the appropriate certifying body in their chosen fields of interest.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must be residents of British Columbia or sponsored under an interprovincial agreement, and BCIT states the program does not accept applications from international students, so the requirements below apply to eligible domestic applicants only. Entry is competitive in three steps. STEP 1: English Studies 12 at 73% or equivalent; one of Pre-Calculus 12 at 67% or Foundations of Math 12 at 73%; Physics 12 at 67%; and successful completion of BHSC 1200 Human Anatomy and Physiology or equivalent. The mandatory Applicant Questionnaire is submitted with the application. STEP 2: files are scored on completion and academic strength of the entrance requirements and on the questionnaire, and shortlisted applicants complete a Multiple Mini Interview. STEP 3 — on conditional acceptance: a criminal record check, an immunisation review filed with Student Health Services, and CPR Level C. Clinical placement requires N95 respirator fit testing to CSA standards at roughly CAD 35 a year, plus proof of immunisation or masking through flu season.
