Overview
The Emergency Nursing Advanced Certificate offers multiple options for registered nurses working in emergency and critical care environments. You’ll develop knowledge and skills in adult and pediatric emergency care, including hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, life support, and dysrhythmia management. The curriculum combines course work with clinical placements in diverse settings such as emergency departments, trauma centres, rural hospitals, and intensive care units. Depending on the option you choose—general, pediatric, or critical care—you’ll gain specialized experience that prepares you for roles in areas like cardiac care, surgical units, military trauma, or even cruise ship nursing. The program is designed for practicing RNs, including those in community or remote settings, and supports progression into more complex care roles.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry requirements for this Specialty Nursing certificate can be waived or enforced at the program head's discretion. Applicants need English language proficiency at BCIT's Category 1 level (English Studies 12 at 73%, or an institution-wide equivalent such as IELTS Academic overall 7.0 with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90 with no section below 20, or PTE Academic 65 with no skill below 60), a diploma in nursing, current practising registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives or a Canadian provincial equivalent (or an RN licence number if practising outside Canada), and a minimum six months of acute-care work experience, evidenced by a resume submitted with the application; exceptions may be granted for undergraduate students or new graduates. Clinical requirements before the practicum include current Basic Life Support/HCP-level CPR from a Canadian provider, proof of BCCNM registration for each clinical course, an immunization record or masking during flu season, and N95 respirator fit testing. International applicants may enrol only if completing the program from outside Canada or holding a valid Canadian work permit for the clinical training period; they are not eligible for a study permit or a Post-Graduation Work Permit.

Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
