Program details

Overview

This advanced certificate suits someone who wants to add geographic information systems skills without making GIS the central part of their job. Seven courses make up the program, split between two introductory units, four units pitched at application level, and a final capstone project. The introductory units cover GIS theory, concepts and related disciplines together with first exposure to ArcGIS software, while the application units add further ArcGIS practice, spatial database development, work with large datasets, and analysis of satellite and other aerial imagery. A final capstone project then lets each student draw on a personal background, such as engineering, to shape the chosen topic.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires one of the following from a recognized institution: a diploma of at least 60 credits, an associate degree, a bachelor's degree, or a minimum of 60 credits of post-secondary coursework that includes 3 credits of BCIT Communications (or equivalent) and 18 credits at the second-year level or higher; no specific course grades or GPA minimum are stated. The English-language standard is BCIT's Category 2, met by English Studies 12 at 67% or equivalent, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band under 5.5), TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall (no section under 3.5), PTE Academic 60, Duolingo 120, or CAEL 70.
