Overview
The Pediatric Nursing Specialty program at BCIT includes Standard, Critical Care, and Anesthesia Care options, each focused on the care of patients from infancy through adolescence. These programs address the unique developmental and medical needs of children, requiring nurses to develop specialized knowledge in pediatric growth, illness, and injury. The Anesthesia Care option is the only program of its kind in Canada and prepares registered nurses for advanced practice in pediatric anesthesia settings. Graduates of any option are eligible to write the Pediatric Nursing exam through the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Certification Program, which validates competence in specialized nursing practice. Up to 1,000 hours of credit may be applied toward initial CNA certification.

Admission Requirements: Admission requires a diploma in nursing plus current active registration as an RN with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), a Canadian provincial equivalent, or an RN licence for those practicing outside Canada, together with a minimum of six months' work experience in an acute care setting. English-language proficiency is BCIT's Category 1: English Studies 12 at 73% or equivalent, stated directly rather than by deferral. Other conditions include current CPR certification (Level C or Health Care Provider, with a practical component, from a Canadian provider), proof of BCCNM registration or provincial equivalent for each clinical course, proof of influenza immunization or agreement to mask during flu season, and an annual N95 respirator fit test before clinical practicum.
