Overview
The Food Safety Preventive Controls and HACCP Plans microcredential courses* provide online training for meeting the Safe Food For Canadians Regulations (SFCR) in food production, processing, or distribution facilities. These courses are designed for anyone that needs to know how to design and implement HACCP-based preventive control programs.
Students learn to develop preventive controls (also known as prerequisite programs) and HACCP plans that are also an integral part of internationally recognized Global Food Safety Initiative (GSFI) food safety standards.
Potential students include individuals seeking food safety professional development, food manufacturing personnel transitioning from operations to quality, international students with food-related education requiring Canadian credentials, and personnel in companies implementing a GFSI standard or that are updating their food safety program to align with the SFCR.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This micro-credential has no formal application process and publishes no minimum GPA or English/French language test score. The first required course, FOOD 1179, carries no academic prerequisite; the second, FOOD 1189, requires a grade of 70% in FOOD 1179. BCIT states no prior work experience or credential is required to begin the program. It is open to international applicants who complete it from outside Canada or who hold valid Canadian status other than a study permit; BCIT specifies that a study permit does not qualify a student for this program. On finishing both required courses, students email the program contact with their name, student number and mailing address to receive the microcredential.

Application Deadline:BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
