Overview
The Residential Air to Air Heat Pump Specialist micro-credential will help you develop applied knowledge and skills — while learning from a team of industry instructors, and completing practical design and installation learning activities. This microcredential specifically incorporates emerging best practices and design considerations to ensure quality heat pump system installations that meet homeowner expectations, and provide heating and cooling during extreme weather events.
The Thermal Environmental Comfort Association (TECA), Home Performance Stakeholder Council (HPSC), and BCIT have partnered to ensure industry-relevant and current curriculum, informed by changing regulations, climate conditions, and lessons learned from the field. This microcredential will accelerate knowledge dissemination and support the industry shift towards high efficiency heating and cooling systems in residential buildings.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: BCIT's first four courses in this microcredential (MZEB 1110, 1120, 2111 and 2120) are open to learners across the workforce with no formal prerequisite; no formal application is required for any stage. To take the capstone installation course, MZEB 3110, and so complete the full microcredential, an applicant must be a journeyperson or final-level apprentice in plumbing, pipefitting or steamfitting, gasfitting, sheet metal, or as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic; hold a valid ODP/ODS certification and a refrigerant-handling certificate number as required under current BC regulations; and have a minimum of 70% in both MZEB 2110 and MZEB 2120. Experience as a mechanical contractor, designer, or tradesperson in the residential sector is strongly recommended. Completed over three to six months across BCIT's ongoing January, April and September intakes, this program is not available to international students.
