Overview

BCIT's Master of Engineering in Smart Grid Systems and Technologies is offered through BCIT's School of Energy and delivered in a blended format combining on-campus instruction with online components, open to both full-time and part-time study with a maximum five-year completion window. The 33-credit curriculum is organized into three nine-credit components: Applications, covering foundational smart grid concepts; Interfaces, covering communications, data analytics, and protection systems; and Components, with electives in areas such as microgrids, renewable energy, energy storage, and power electronics. The program concludes with a six-credit capstone, in which students choose between an independent applied research project or additional elective coursework. Teaching includes team projects centred on designing a smart microgrid, alongside laboratory work and industry case studies covering power systems analysis, renewable integration, cybersecurity, and utility management. Admission normally requires a bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics engineering with a minimum 2.4 GPA, though applicants with a related engineering, computer science, or mathematics degree may be considered under alternate entry criteria; English proficiency equivalent to Grade 12 is required, and industry experience is viewed favourably. The program suits working engineers seeking advanced qualifications in grid modernization and renewable energy integration without leaving their current employment.
