Program details

Overview

BCIT's Power Engineering Second Class courses prepare students for the Interprovincial 2nd Class Power Engineer exam, one step below the top of the province's power engineering certification ladder. Delivered by correspondence, the courses are split into Part A and Part B, comprising six papers in total that build on the operating and theoretical knowledge required at the 3rd Class level. Entry requires the candidate to already hold 3rd Class Power Engineer certification. As with the program's other correspondence levels, students may register for a maximum of two courses at a time, letting them study around existing work schedules. There are no live virtual classes or set weekly sessions; students work through the material independently, with tutoring available by email, phone, and online conferencing during office hours. The courses suit power engineers who already hold 3rd Class certification and are advancing toward more senior plant-operating responsibilities in industrial, institutional, or utility settings, where 2nd Class standing is typically a prerequisite for supervisory or chief-engineer positions below the most senior 1st Class level.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: BCIT's own page for this program does not name an English Language Proficiency category; it states only that applicants need Grade 12 English and Grade 11 Math to take these courses. Registrants also need practical qualifying experience meeting Technical Safety BC's regulations, and anyone enrolling at the 3rd, 2nd or 1st Class level must already hold the next lower Interprovincial Power Engineers' Certificate. International applicants must hold valid status in Canada other than a study permit, since this program does not admit study-permit holders, and may be asked to show proof of the minimum prerequisites before registration is approved. All students must sit the final exam at a BCIT-approved invigilation centre in Canada.

Application Details

Application Deadline: BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
