Overview

The Power Engineer program prepares students to operate, maintain and manage industrial power and process plants. These plants are associated with various industries such as pulp and paper, chemical manufacturing, food processing, electrical generation, petroleum refining, institutional mechanical systems and others. Because of the potential danger of explosions, power engineers must be highly trained and certified. Power Engineers operate, maintain and manage industrial power and process plants. Because of the potential danger of explosions, power engineers must be highly trained and certified. Provincial regulations require plant personnel be certified prior to assuming positions of responsibility in the operation of fired pressure equipment. Certification is based on plant experience and supervised exams administered by the provincial safety authority such as Technical Safety BC.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires English Studies 12 at 50% or equivalent (or a passing result on BCIT's English Trades Entry Assessment), BCIT's Category 3 English-proficiency standard, plus one of Pre-Calculus 11, Foundations of Mathematics 11, or Workplace Mathematics 11 at 50% or equivalent (or BCIT's Math Trades Entry Assessment). The program page also asks for sufficient physical strength and stamina, and good hearing, vision, colour vision, and manual dexterity, together with sound theoretical and practical math skills and mechanical aptitude; prior power-plant experience is noted as an asset but is not required. No minimum GPA or average is stated. The program has a single annual intake in August.

Application Deadline: BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
