Program details

Overview

This is the technical training component of the Ironworker Generalist apprenticeship at BCIT, covering assembly of structural frameworks from steel, concrete, and timber for buildings, bridges, dams, and renewable energy structures. The role demands teamwork, problem-solving, and comfort working outdoors, often beyond standard hours. Training totals 600 in-school hours across three levels: Level 1 at 10 weeks (300 hours), and Levels 2 and 3 at 6 weeks (180 hours) each, alongside a required 4,260 workplace hours completed with a sponsoring employer. Classes run Monday to Friday at BCIT's Burnaby campus, in either a 0700-1330 or 1330-2000 shift, with multiple intakes offered annually. To enrol, candidates must already be registered as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC, which they can reach by completing the 23-week Ironworker Foundation program or by securing employer sponsorship. Recommended preparation is Grade 10 education or equivalent, with English 10, Math 10, and Science 10, and high school graduation preferred. On completing all levels and passing required assessments, apprentices earn the BC Certificate of Apprenticeship, BC Certificate of Qualification, and the Interprovincial Standard Endorsement (Red Seal), and may also qualify for BCIT's Diploma of Trades Training. The program suits working apprentices already employed in the ironworking trade.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants must be an active apprentice registered with SkilledTradesBC, entering either by completing BCIT's 23-week Ironworker Foundation program for credit toward Level 1, or by securing employment with an ironworker sponsor who registers them. BCIT recommends, without strictly requiring, high-school completion including English 10 or demonstrated English-language proficiency, any Math 10, and Science 10; no standardized English test score is published for this trade. Applicants with physical or medical concerns are directed to Accessibility Services. Training is restricted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with multiple intake dates offered throughout the year.

Application Details

Application Deadline: BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
