Program details

Overview

This graduate certificate prepares registered nurses to expand their scope of practice to include prescribing medications, covering conditions such as smoking cessation, immunizations, contraception, and topical wound care across settings such as retirement homes and long-term care residences. The program was developed in consultation with stakeholders and informed by evidence from other jurisdictions to align with current legislation, incorporating ways of knowing and learning rooted in Indigenous and bilingual perspectives. Delivered online through a seven-college Ontario consortium spanning Southeastern and Northwestern Ontario, the program lets learners register with the college closest to their preferred clinical placement location.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: ENTRY IS RESTRICTED TO PRACTISING ONTARIO REGISTERED NURSES. To be eligible you must hold current registration as a registered nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario; have two years of full-time nursing work experience, which Cambrian quantifies as 3,900 hours or the equivalent; and hold Canadian citizenship, Canadian permanent resident status, or authorisation under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act that permits you to practise nursing in Ontario. WHAT THAT MEANS FOR APPLICANTS FROM OUTSIDE CANADA. There is no separate international entry route to this certificate and Cambrian publishes no English test score for it, because the immigration-status condition above has to be satisfied before you can be admitted at all. STRUCTURE. You have one calendar year to finish two theory courses and a clinical practicum of 150 hours.
